building codes for portable spas

Local Code Guidelines

General Guidelines*

1. All electrical items MUST be a minimum of 6’ away from water’s edge. This includes

receptacles, fans, lights, switches, disconnect boxes, etc.

2. Any window that is within 5’ of water’s edge must be changed to tempered glass. This

expense and the scheduling of doing so is the homeowner’s responsibility. Sliding glass

doors will not need to be changed out as they are tempered glass.

3. Any aluminum or metal within’ 5’ of water’s edge must be bonded. This includes windows,

aluminum framed doors such as sliding glass door, screen doors, screen cage etc. This will

be a green #8 bond wire that will be visible in most cases. This is to be handled by the

electrician.

4. If installing a cover lifter, there must be a minimum of 15” between the wall and the spa

where the cover will rest in the open position.

5. In many cases, a screen wall will need to be removed in order to deliver your spa inside

your screen enclosure. If this is required, the homeowner will need to contact a screen

company for pricing to do so. We will do a site inspection at no charge if desired to plan

how we will get the spa in. If the homeowner would like for us to do this, call the service

department to schedule.

6. A dedicated 240-volt line must be run and will also require a GFCI breaker. This is to be

handled by an electrician at the homeowners’ expense. The amperage requirement will

vary so look the specifications for the spa being purchased.

7. For 120-volt spas, a dedicated line must also be installed but do not require a GFCI breaker

as the spa comes with one. The amperage requirement will vary, so look on the

specifications for the spa being purchased.

8. A VCCD form must be signed by the homeowner whom we will submit for approval. We

must have a site plan showing where the spa will be located.

9. A permit is required for all spas.

*Local codes and permit requirements for portable spas vary by county and community; it is the homeowner’s responsibility to verify and comply with current regulations before installation.
